Visualizing Your Postop Pouch...The Highlighter Marker.

Hi it’s Steph Wagner, Bariatric Dietitian from foodcoach.me

I’m a big visual person. If someone is going teach me something or explain to me something, I need them to really spell it out and preferably with a visual. My husband knows this about me. As he has recently tried to get me into soccer he has had to use lots of visuals for me to understand the game and understand how the game can end in a tie.

I love using visuals for weight loss surgery patients because there are a lot of rules to follow but the why behind it makes it easier to stick with them day in and day out. One visual I really like is this highlighter marker.

You’ll often hear me stress the importance of taking small bites of your foods, especially lean meats. So much emphasis gets put on chewing it well but they key is to take a really small bite to begin with.

You see, after gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and also true with gastric banding, the opening into the stomach pouch is very restricted. You could say it’s the same as the top of this highlighter marker. We are trying to get food into such a small little pouch, it’s really important to take it small and slow to get food to fit comfortably.

If the bite is too big, even if chewed really really well, that food will all hit the opening to the pouch at once and leave you feeling uncomfortable. OR if you eat too fast the bites start backing up on each other leaving you with same sensation. Instead, keep your bites the size of a black bean, chew well of course and pause in between your bites. This will allow things to move much more smoothly.
